Cycle coast to coast on this stunning 87km cycle trail from Opua on the East Coast to Horeke at the 87km from Opua Marina which is a few kilometres from Paihia on the East Coast to Horeke at the top of the Hokianga Harbour on the West Coast. The Pou Herenga Tai Trail tells the story of an emerging nation, capturing the history and heritage of both Maori and European settlers in the Far North and the Bay of Islands. Running between the picturesque Hokianga Harbour and the beautiful Bay of Islands. East to West the trail starts at Opua is close to ‘the gateway of the Bay of Islands’, Paihia, offering shops, fantastic restaurants and cafes , accommodation and activities to suit everyone and every taste. Get out amongst the islands or visit historic Russell or the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. The new Waitangi Mountain Bike Park, is a perfect introduction to mountain biking with lots of easy, scenic trails that you can take at your own pace, offering 10 trails of varying difficulty with great flow and features. A worthwhile side trip! Part-way along route from Opua to Taumarere is closed due to reinstatement of the railway line. The section closed coming from Opua is from the tunnel to Long bridge at Taumarere. Short rides ideal for young and learner riders are from Opua to the tunnel along the trail is (4.1km). Public access is from SHWY11 at the Kawakawa rugby club where there is parking, along to Kawakawa township (3.5km). Next stop Kawakawa a treasure trove, home to glow worm caves, local Māori artists, craft shops, food and coffee. Famous for its toilets designed by Hundertwasser and the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway’s steam train Gabriel. On to Kaikohe, the highest point on the trail. The main local attraction is Heritage Kaikohe, including a pioneer village with restored historic buildings, Māori artefacts, gum-digging equipment and a blacksmith’s shop. Not far from Kaikohe are the hot pools at Ngawha Springs. Okaihau a friendly country town with a café serving homemade delicacies and a special claim to fame a fire service museum (located in the nearby Waihou Valley).
